In May, 2005, Officer Steve Borders began his career with the Collierville Police Department as a Jailer. It was during this time that Steve also attended Kaplan University. In May, 2006, Steve graduated Summa cum Laude with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice.
Following his degree, Officer Borders applied to become a Police Officer with the department, and on May 23, 2007, he graduated the Memphis Police Academy’s 18th regional class. In 2010, Officer Borders joined the department’s Traffic Unit. The Traffic Unit is tasked with working most of the traffic crashes that occur in the town, aggressive traffic enforcement, child seat installation, and DUI enforcement. Officer Borders has attended Basic Traffic School, Advanced Traffic School, and on June 15, 2012, he completed Traffic Reconstruction School. Officer Steve Borders’ strong work ethic and leadership made him an obvious choice for the department’s Field Training Officer position. On February 22, 2013, Steve completed the Field Training Officer certification class and started passing his knowledge, skills, and work ethic on to newly hired Officers.Officer Steve Borders continues to set the bar as a Traffic Officer. During the month of December, 2013, Officer Borders was awarded the Officer of the Month award for working 24 crashes, issuing 42 tickets, and making seven self-initiated arrests. The month of December culminated in an outstanding year of performance which showed Officer Borders to have worked 242 crashes, issued 579 citations, and made 97 arrests. Officer Borders’ stats equate to an average of over 48 citations a month and over 8 arrests a month.
It is with great pride that I nominate Officer Steve Borders for the 2013 Memphis and Shelby County Optimist Club Respect for Law Committee Officer of the Year for Collierville.
